Luke 22:39-46 - "In Gethsemane Alone”
Today the world celebrates Easter, the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. This word Easter comes from an error in translations and is not scriptural. Many will look at Acts 12:4 for scriptural reference but the word in original Greek is “pascha” which means Passover not Easter. However, it is good that many recognize His death and resurrection. It should be known that Jesus the son of God came down for the purpose to save sinners from their sins. Jesus the son of God the only one both man and God while here on earth. In our text, He finds himself down, yet lifted because His Father is with Him. Jesus looks into the seducing eyes of death; He is bothered by satanic temptation. Yet He fights in a battle that is deemed impossible. Jesus understands that in order for His purpose to be fulfilled, He must face a cruel cross. The cross He faces is cruel because it bears the sins of all mankind. As we look at the cross of Jesus, we see that He battles to face this cross. Cross bearing the sin of homosexuality, the cross bearing the sin of unfaithfulness, this cross bearing the sin of unforgiveness, this cross bears the sin of division. As we look at the great physician Luke record Jesus preparing for what He will face, in the garden of Gethsemane. He enters knowing that Judas will betray Him. He asks the disciples to pray with Him that they enter not into temptation. The Lord finds that his disciples do not fully comprehend the things that is about to happen to their savior Jesus. In this text, Jesus states to His disciples, to pray. We as children of God we must pray because one day we will face our own “Gethsemane”. As Luke looks at the Lord, he sees the pain of the cross literally in the eyes of Jesus.
